Do Re Mi: If You Can Read Music, Thank Guido D'Arezzo. * Do Re Mi: If You Can Read Music, Thank Guido D'Arezzo Guido d'Arezzo(gwē`dō därĕt`tsō)or Guido Aretinus(ârətī`nəs), c.990–1050, Italian Benedictine monk, known for his contributions to musical notation and theory. , bySusan L. Roth with Angelo Mafucci. Houghton Mifflin Houghton Mifflin Company is a leading educational publisher in the United States. The company's headquarters is located in Boston's Back Bay. This is an excellent book to introduce to young children (and theyoung at heart) about how printed music actually began! While living inQueens, New York New York, state, United StatesNew York,Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of , Susan Roth thought that her surroundings reflected adiverse place where people came from many different ethnic backgrounds. The children may not speak the same language, but they could communicatein a universal language by reading music. This is what inspired Roth towrite her book and hold tribute to the creator of written music! For many years, Guido D'Arezzo, a young man from Tuscanyimagined that his system of lines and spaces could be used as a writtenlanguage of music, and he was determined to make his ideas work. Thereader will marvel at this historical documentation, which begins with agracious acknowledgment acknowledgment,in law, formal declaration or admission by a person who executed an instrument (e.g., a will or a deed) that the instrument is his. The acknowledgment is made before a court, a notary public, or any other authorized person. to the author's friend and scholar AngeloMafucci, and a foreword foreword?n.A preface or an introductory note, as for a book, especially by a person other than the author.forewordNounan introductory statement to a bookNoun 1. admiring Guido D'Arezzo's musicwriting method, written by Mafucci. The young reader will appreciate thefinal glossary page, which includes both current as well as ancientdefinitions. The author's note page features historicaldocumentation and research, while the select bibliography page offersnumerous references. I was captured with the beautiful illustrations, which werecollages made of papers from all over the world, including many fromItaly. Each page is printed in a different color, to enhance theseillustrations. As the reader travels through the book, the author sharesthe emotions and frustrations of the hero, Guido, indicated with theillustrations and clearly stated story. The larger text was carefullyplaced on each page, as if it was part of each illustration. At thestory's conclusion, Roth selected a page to explain the graphics ofGuido's new system of lines and spaces, and she also converted thenotation to a modern day staff. This book is a delightful and refreshing historical musical source, allowing the reader to travel back 10 centuries and marvel at howprinted music began!--Reviewed by Diane Higgins, NCTM NCTM National Council of Teachers of MathematicsNCTM Nationally Certified Teacher of MusicNCTM North Carolina Transportation MuseumNCTM National Capital Trolley MuseumNCTM Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage , Charlotte, NorthCarolina “Charlotte” redirects here.
