Escher and the Alhambra. Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch artist in the 1920s and 1930s who is famous for using math to create complicated patterns, called tessellations. When Escher was studying art in school he experimented by making designs with simple tessellations. He would draw a picture in the shape of a square or a rectangle and then repeat it.
