Editor's note. This is a time in our nation's history for truly appreciatingwhat it means to be an American American,river, 30 mi (48 km) long, rising in N central Calif. in the Sierra Nevada and flowing SW into the Sacramento River at Sacramento. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill (see Sutter, John Augustus) along the river in 1848 led to the California gold rush of . It is a time to reflect upon our richcultural diversity and our many precious resources. And of all ournatural resources, the greatest is our people. Their wide arrays oftalents and skills have brought success and prosperity to our country.We are artists and engineers, craftspeople crafts��people?pl.n.People who practice a craft; artisans. and scientists, health careproviders and agriculturalists--and together we have built the greatestcountry on earth. Our differences have sometimes created difficulties,but ultimately, they are our greatest strength. In this issue of Techniques, we try to understand a little bit moreabout the different ways individuals think and learn. A greaterunderstanding of individual intelligences and learning styles maycontribute to the educational process for both students and teachers,but this understanding has benefits outside the walls of educationalinstitutions. It may lead to a greater respect and appreciation forindividual abilities. Many of our new residents are learning our language inEnglish-as-a-second-language classes.
