Experimental Drawing, 30th Anniversary Edition.

Experimental Drawing, 30th Anniversary Edition. EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING, 30th Anniversary Edition (2010; $22.99), byRobert Kaupelis. Watson-Guptill Publications. I spent seven years teaching in the same department at New YorkUniversity with Bob Kaupelis. By any measure, he was an outstandingteacher. This book is about drawing: about the experience of drawing andseeing drawings, and about the possibilities of extending ourtraditional concepts about drawing. The book would be appropriate formiddle- and high-school students. It would be informative for all artteachers. A wide range of topics is included: contour, gesture and modeleddrawing; using light and dark; the use of photographs, grids andprojected images; and a discussion of old and modern masters. The textis clearly written without any obscure language. There are excellent illustrations: works by Willem de Kooning,Michelangelo, Modigliani, Franz Kline, Egon Schiele, Leonardo da Vinciand many others. Kaupelis included drawings done by his students andsome of his own work. One can sense his knowledge and skill as an artistand teacher. I was saddened to learn that Bob Kanpelis died in 2009. This bookserves as an important and lasting legacy. www.randomhouse.com | circle # 393
