Fast fact. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] One in 5 public school students is Hispanic, says a new study bythe Washington-based research group Pew Hispanic Center. The number ofLatino students--which has doubled since 1990 to reach 10 million in2006--is expected to swell to 28 million by 2050. The good news foreducators--who are grappling with how to educate English learners--isthat 82 percent of Latino students speak English fluently. Among the provisions in the $700 billion financial rescue packageis an extension of two programs that fund rural schools and communitiesthat have been relying on declining income and property tax bases. Thebailout also includes $400 million in deductions for teachers who buyschool supplies with their own money. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
