With suchan approach and the use of various disciplines as well as academiciansand professionals working in this area, we could understand the nature, causes, consequences and treatment for domestic violence. The first article serves as an introduction to this collection ondomestic violence, putting more emphasis on the need for aninterdisciplinary approach. The second article "Revising the Ruleof the Thumb", provides a historical analysis on domestic violencein America, tracing its roots in the western traditions.'Protecting Battered Women: Latest trends in civil legalRelief' the authors identify emerging trends in civil protectionorders. Inthe article, "Police handling of domestic violence calls: Anoverview and further investigation", the study compares the ratesand correlates associated with an arrest response when police respond todomestic assault calls on one jurisdiction at one point in time throughtwo different methodological approaches, police, self-report andcase-record analysis. The study indicated that when policeself-reported, there was a high likelihood of arrests. The rate ofarrests was about 60%, while police reports indicated a much lower rateof arrests (20%). Finally the article, "Does Batterer Treatment Reduce Violence?A Synthesis of the Literature," Robert G. Davis and Bruce G. Tylor, provide an extensive review of the research literature on the efficacyof court mandated counselling for misdemeanour domestic violenceoffenders. The authors provide a thoughtful critique of the researchconducted to date testing the impact of court-mandated counselling onthis particular offender population. The paper basically reviews threequestions based on the research literature on group treatment programsfor batterers: Does treatment reduce violence relative to the absence oftreatment? Do some forms of treatment work better than others, and doestreatment work better for some batterers than for others? The study concluded that there is fairly consistent evidence thattreatment works and that the effect of treatment is substantial.Regarding the second question, little evidence to date shows that oneform of treatment is superior to another or that longer programs turnout less violent graduates than shorter ones. For the last question, theresult shows that their basis for hypothesising that some batterers aremay fare better in treatment and fare better in certain types oftreatment than others. The paper also concludes with lessons fromliterature on designing future research.
